SARASOTA - Sarasota County would become the first county in Florida to ban retail pet stores from selling commercially bred dogs, cats and rabbits, if it approves an ordinance set for a public hearing early next year. After nearly four hours of sometimes emotional public comment, the County Commission voted 4-1 Monday to set a public hearing for Jan. 27, 2016, on the ban. More than 100 people attended the meeting on an issue that has been simmering since 2012. More than 30 municipalities in Florida have adopted similar bans, but no counties have imposed one.
