The national animal welfare spotlight will be on Jacksonville in October, as about 1,500 leaders of the no-kill movement converge on the city for the annual No More Homeless Pets national conference. While here, they will check out Jacksonville’s model of a successful, no-kill community, where the number of animals that leave the city shelter alive has skyrocketed from 17 percent in 2007 to about 90 percent so far this year. They will learn what to do and what not to do from the leaders of the big three of local animal welfare — First Coast No More Homeless Pets, Jacksonville Animal Care and Protective Services and the Jacksonville Humane Society....
